Cambridge Street was on the five year bike plan in 2016 and was supposed to be completed by 2022. To say that we are going too fast or that it was a surprise is just false:

Our balkanized political system that grants outsize power over land use to individual Supervisors is partly to blame here. Safety of transit users and pedestrians is a city wide issue, yet because our leaders are beholden to individual merchant groups, we get these outcomes.

A remarkable number of motorists view the sudden, violent catastrophic injuries and deaths of young, healthy people as a perfectly acceptable trade off for their convenience and storage of their property. A city can either prioritize cars or be safe for people. It cannot do both.

The City of Cambridge City Council’s vote to allow an 18-month delay of the implementation of the Cycling Safety Ordinance—which protects KIDS ON BIKES for god’s sake!!—is a spectacular embarrassment, and really puts a pin on “limousine” in the phrase “city of limousine liberals.”
