Excellent piece by Henry Mance. Sonia Livingstone is on the money here. As Steven Pinker often suggests, where behaviour is the problem, behaviour is the solution. Schools should of course do their bit, but parents, regulators, and children themselves need to find a way forward that

Some genuinly interesting suggestions here. Fascinated, however, how the fairly obscure matter of VAT on independent school fees has become such a totemic issue for some that they would place it at top of their list, ahead of much more impactful reforms.

Adam Boxer (find me on 🧵s) Tim Leunig I don't really get what is excellent about it. The suggestion that private schools that aren't Harrow or Eton aren't already cutting costs, halting capex investment, or seeking every which way to maximise non-fee income is just plain wrong, for starters. And the 'many' in 'many

Useful reflection on crucial difference between theory and practice, and why 'the science of learning' is a valuable tool for both 'traditional' and 'progressive' teachers.

Correctly implemented technology can and does routinely support teaching and learning. But the notion that mobile phones in schools solve more problems than they create is for the birds.

While banning smartphones in schools is beneficial, I worry about how we frame this debate:

-conflating smartphone use with other useful tech
-assuming school bans wd succeed w/o regulatory oversight of social media/manufacturers & gov intervention to inform/support parents
