I welcome the adoption of the EU Pact on Migration and Asylum by the European Parliament, a big step forward towards a more effective, shared asylum system.

The Pact must now be implemented upholding the principles of refugee protection: UNHCR stands ready to support.

I had the honour of sharing an Iftar dinner with some of the more than 500,000 Sudanese refugees & asylum seekers who have been welcomed into Egypt.

My solidarity with them & all those forcibly displaced.

Don’t believe politicians using elections to stigmatize refugees and promise to “get rid of all immigrants”. They are just after your votes.

We can deal effectively with people on the move and respect their rights instead of invoking brutal measures which are wrong and useless.

As the US Congress and Administration pursue complex budget negotiations, I join those asking for crucial American leadership in humanitarian and refugee operations overseas to stay strong, thus contributing to global peace and stability — a paramount US interest. 🇺🇸

An honour and a pleasure to meet Felipe Paullier, who leads the United Nations Youth Office. I told him
he can count on UNHCR’s strong support in ensuring that youth issues and the participation of young people in decision making on crucial global matters are truly part of the UN agenda.

Grateful to be part of the #ehf2024 today in Brussels: in this troubled word it is crucial to maintain and increase humanitarian aid.

European leadership, initiatives and resources are needed more than ever to save and protect lives, and to give hope to millions.

Today the United Nations asked for $852 million in humanitarian aid for #Rohingya refugees in Bangladesh in 2024.

A number of governments expressed support.

But it is crucial not to forget this crisis.

To reverse the decline of aid.

To renew efforts to find solutions in Myanmar.
