Dieselgate, Part 2. This time it's Cummings engines in nearly a million Stellantis North America RAM trucks that violated Clean Air Act requirements for a decade. Given the dangerous health effects of particulate pollution, let's be clear: this deliberate & illegal act KILLED THOUSANDS!😡

I'm live on NPR's On Point in 5 mins (at 10-11am ET) alongside Amy Westervelt and Duncan Meisel, talking about how the oil industry has worked for decades to shift blame for the climate crisis from companies to consumers. Come join us! 📻wbur.org/onpoint/2023/1…

We do not do online petitions. We do not do NGO coalition letters. We do not do fucking bus stop ads.

We CHASE fossil fuel CEOs and the politicians who do their bidding. And we do not apologize.

As we (rightly) celebrate the first ever UN climate pact to recognise the role of fossil fuels, just a reminder that fossil fuel interests have known that their products could cause dangerous global heating since before UN climate talks even began three decades ago.

First they ignore you, then they laugh at you, then they fight you, then a global pact calls for 'transitioning away from fossil fuels'...

...then they fight you some more.

How will we explain to our children and grandchildren that unfortunately, we couldn’t leave them a livable planet because a few petro-states vetoed phasing out fossil fuels?

As ever with COPs, the outcome is often about incremental forward moves.

Some of this new wording around fossil fuels was unthinkable, even a year ago.

But the language is exceptionally loose and open to all kinds of (mis)interpretation.

Nonetheless, it is a move forwards

My take: The crisis is driven by fossil fuels, which the industry is phasing *UP*

Is 'transition away' a strong enough signal to change that anytime soon? Not in my opinion

But the citing of fossil fuels is historic. It's a tragedy it has taken 30 years

Here are my thoughts on the latest text.

On fossil fuels:

For the first time in three decades of climate negotiations the words fossil fuels have made it into a COP outcome. We are finally naming the elephant in the room. The genie is never going back into the bottle &…

Just been trying to explain this to my daughter who is v excited they've agreed to end use of fossil fuels after hearing about it on the radio...

Me: 'I invite you to tidy your room is not quite the same as I demand that you tidy your room NOW.'

Her: 'Oh, yeah.'

The decision at to finally recognize that the climate crisis is, at its heart, a fossil fuel crisis is an important milestone. But it is also the bare minimum we need and is long overdue. The influence of petrostates is still evident in the half measures and loopholes…

Have some dignity, Reuters, and ban fossil fuel advertising, starting with your climate coverage.

To those who opposed a clear reference to phase out of fossil fuels during the Climate Conference, I want to say:

Whether you like it or not, fossil fuel phase out is inevitable. Let’s hope it doesn’t come too late.

'calls on...'

This is the crucial term here.

In UNFCCC legal jargon, this is known to mean an 'invitation' or 'request'

And, even more crucially, it is the *weakest* of all the various terms used for such exhortations

The response to Licypriya Kangujam's brave protest at UN climate talks was to tell cameras 'We're very proud of the enthusiasm of young people', & then to kick her out.

How profoundly symbolic of the greenwashed response of & Big Oil to the science of stopping climate change.
