Are you involved in PhD admissions? Do you advertise projects or assess candidates?

Check out this paper, the latest publication from our Equator project. Doctoral recruitment is often biased against students from marginalised backgrounds- we propose changes to improve equity:

📢New paper alert!!

We analysed PhD recruitment processes in the geosciences, and developed recommendations for making the process more equitable.

Now out in Nature Geoscience: doi.org/10.1038/s41561… (1/3)🔨🌋☁️

Had a great time at the NHM Explorers Programme Summer Social presenting my PhD research and connecting folks with the REED Ecological Network as their new partnerships officer. Also great to reconnect with my Equator Research School folk! Exciting news to come, watch this space 👀👀

Please RT! I'm looking to get short statements from queer marine scientists & biologists (& related fields) about their experiences being queer in their fields. Any level of experience or career is okay, anonymous statements are possible. DM me here on Twitter or email me!

Aimovig is generally working really well at reducing my migraines to a manageable level, but annoyingly I’m suffering from a rare severe side effects. My doctor is having me try out a medication to counter it… and one of it *its* side effects is severe headaches 🤦

As we enter school summer holiday period, I did an interview reflecting on the realities of working part-time in academia.

A nice example of how exploitative HE in the UK is. If you voluntarily took on duties in the past that are not related to your pay (to help out colleagues and your uni) your pay can be deducted for not subsequently continuing those voluntary duties.

Just had a fantastic week staring at weird little sharks in nodules, as the 1st visitor in the brand-new fossil fish space at the American Museum of Natural History, and visiting tons of old friends from RGGS at AMNH! 🦈

Getting strong ‘If I can’t see you, you can’t see me’ vibes from this mysterious statue in New Street station, as if you’re playing hide and seek with a three year old

For I’m going to indulge myself by spending some time segmenting this deliciously noisy CT scan. There’s a whole 3D skull in there, honestly 🤩

the UK media: universities need to stop luring students into degrees where they’ll receive poor-quality teaching that does nothing to improve their prospects

UKHE: good news! we did brilliant teaching so our students did brilliantly 😃

the UK media: this is inexplicable
