As I enjoy Jeopardy, back-to-back Tester and Sheehy ads: the Tester ad highlighting his desire to shut down the border, and the Sheehy ad saying he would support preventing lawmakers from becoming lobbyists (and the fact he's a former SEAL).

Except that if Johnson took the Senate deal in Feb. he probably could have gotten some border policy included. Not HR2, but something.

Now he’ll get essentially the same aid package minus the big GOP ask

NEWS — Article II falls. Senate votes along party lines, 51-49, to find second impeachment article against Mayorkas to be unconstitutional. This effectively ends the proceedings. Senate voting now to adjourn as a court of impeachment.

As the Senate votes to adjourn the impeachment trial, Joe Manchin now having a last minute glass of milk on the floor likely making a good pairing with the chocolate covered cookie that he just ate

The botched FAFSA rollout leaves millions of low-income students in limbo, uncertain of their financial aid—and, by extension, whether they will be able to attend college at all. My latest on what the FAFSA debacle means for students and institutions:

News: The trump campaign is asking downballot Republican candidates for 5% of the proceeds for every fundraising appeal they send out that uses Trump’s name, image and likeness politico.com/news/2024/04/1…

NEW: 51-48-1, Senate votes that Schumer’s point of order is well taken (that article I is unconstitutional because it doesn’t allege an impeachable offense).

All Dems voted yes. Murkowski voted present.

🚨Republican leadership refused to allow a vote on a law to repeal the 1864 law. This is key: republicans who said they would vote to repeal voted against allowing the vote to take place.

I’m inside the Senate chamber for the start of the trial.

Some color before it begins:

Sen. Fetterman is wearing a suit, ditching his usual hoodies and shorts to dress up for the occasion.

Jeffries told Mike Johnson that Democrats wouldn't accept a penny less than the ~$9.5 billion in humanitarian aid from the Senate bill. Looks like that's what they got: axios.com/2024/04/16/mik…

Some former Speakers of the House become Olivia Nuzzi reply guys. Others try to do college tours to rehabilitate their reputation. I write about the latter model for POLITICO politico.com/news/magazine/…

Over 50 ago, Hindus and Muslims in northern India compromised to share land between a mosque and a temple. Now that agreement has unraveled, with the tacit backing of the ruling party. Thank you Omkar Khandekar for working with me on such a tough story.

It seems as if the humanitarian assistance Democrats wanted is included in the supplemental bill providing aid to Israel.

A botched rollout of a new FAFSA form could mean that dramatically fewer students enroll in college in the fall.

I’ve spoken to a few House Republican Ukraine/israel supporters this morning.

Patience is running *very* thin with Johnson. Most are giving Johnson time to put out a plan. But more and more Republicans are eyeing a discharge petition.
