MH language is so important because framing experiences in terms of 'illnesses' with 'symptoms' leads one to assume, 1. there is an underlaying biological entity, which 2. needs a medical (e.g. pharmacological) solution. The frame is arbitrary and neither assumption is correct.

How often it is that a young person’s pain (self-harm; eating problems) is a violent attack, via the self, on a dysfunctional family, school or wider system; a violent call for systemic change. But we rarely see it like that - instead we pathologise them & treat *their* disorder.

There is no chemical imbalance, there is no antidepressant drug... now that I have your attention.
