I've talked to a lot of people who are confused about why a homeless person wouldn't move to a big city with warmer weather and more services. Why *would* they stay put when there's a San Francisco out there? The answer is pretty intuitive, though. Home is familiar. (1)

i track my hours and i've worked an average of 24 hours/week since finishing parental leave last year (including holidays, sick days etc). obviously being a phd student with a toddler & a baby isn't representative of all of academia, but i do think silly hours are often a choice.

The Portuguese election yesterday highlights a common trend: support for the far right often grows very fast.

We know, however, that people don't change their minds so fast. What can explain this speed of growth?

I deal with this question in my book, coming out this year.

I don't generally think any country has a right to exist. I don't think nation-states are the sort of things that do or even could have rights, and even if they were indefinite perpetuation would not be among those rights.

Friends -- I'll be in Akl next winter for research (on how visa systems produce migrant exploitation) and am looking for a sublet. Ideal would be baby-friendly 2 bed within 45 mins bike or PT of Symonds St, May-August -- but I'm open to other options. Leads or RTs appreciated :)

Today in 'Are we sure WFH is good': W. Point students in 2020 randomly assigned to in class/online for intro econ (only this class). Same prof, same content. Result: .215 stdev worse outcomes for online, less feeling of connection, worse for less-prepared kids. Proximity matters!

interesting paper.... was thinking the other day -- the only way that studying in the heart of the neoliberal hegemon has changed my political opinions has been making me more open to the economic benefits of higher education... not sure what to make of that.

I imposed a 'don't use a device unless you genuinely need to' policy in my lectures over summer. Worked well but maybe only because the class was small and old.
