And as 𝖦𝗋𝗂𝗆𝖾𝗌 ⏳ signs off, the ‘talkie’ part of IMS Ibiza 2023 draws to a close. The industry came together to Face The Future, and in the short term that means a poolside boogie at the @mixmag lab with sashaofficial b2b ANNA, and the big Dalt Vila party tonight.

“There’s this idea that we can eliminate pain, and that can be a disincentive for trying to make the world better. We shouldn’t aim for utopia, but a world where suffering is reduced and everyone has opportunity. But it’s sick to have something to fight against” 𝖦𝗋𝗂𝗆𝖾𝗌 ⏳

“I always say to my manager: ‘I want to make hieroglyphics,’” says 𝖦𝗋𝗂𝗆𝖾𝗌 ⏳. “I don’t care if people remember my name, but I want to be able to meaningfully contribute to this culture at a time of great change.”

A book recommendation from 𝖦𝗋𝗂𝗆𝖾𝗌 ⏳: ‘Surface Detail’ by Ian Banks, her favourite sci-fi novel. Though she is slightly spoiling the plot right now, if you want to understand her vision of the future, it sounds like it’s worth reading. IMS Ibiza Book Club strikes again today.

“I feel like our culture is really alienated from children. It’s so much easier to realise how great humans are when you see the human mind untainted from all the things that fuck us up. Seeing my kids with their friends is a really inspiring thing.” 𝖦𝗋𝗂𝗆𝖾𝗌 ⏳

“I have really crazy stage fright: touring was really hard on me psychologically. I’m in a state of sheer terror on stage. It’s the singing I hate. I’m not a very good singer! I love DJing, I like building stuff over performing live.” 𝖦𝗋𝗂𝗆𝖾𝗌 ⏳

“I feel like we need to stop attacking the things that we don’t like and start building things that we do like,” says 𝖦𝗋𝗂𝗆𝖾𝗌 ⏳

‘I kind’ve like the patriarchy. I like the supply chain, food, roads, the good things that came from it. It’s oppressive and overly dominant, and if you don’t include women it can become toxic, but let’s build our own new institutions” says 𝖦𝗋𝗂𝗆𝖾𝗌 ⏳

“If you choose to become an artist. You have no control over what other people perceive of you. Anything in the public eye is judged.” 𝖦𝗋𝗂𝗆𝖾𝗌 ⏳ then quotes Taylor Swift: “people throw rocks at things that shine.”

“I’ve had people saying ‘your baby daddy invaded Bolivia for lithium,’ says 𝖦𝗋𝗂𝗆𝖾𝗌 ⏳. “I’ve been cancelled so many times - I’m not sure it can get worse than saying I support war crimes.’

“We’re really forcing [musical collaborator] Tale Of Us Mateo to engage with pop music, “ says 𝖦𝗋𝗂𝗆𝖾𝗌 ⏳, “it’s like, ‘could we have a chord somewhere, not just a bass and a kick?’”

“I like collaborating with people who really care about pushing the boundaries of audio.” Says 𝖦𝗋𝗂𝗆𝖾𝗌 ⏳ “I worked alone for ten years, not even with engineers. Though I don’t know what I was so militant about that, it seems crazy now.”

“The reason AI models do evil things is because their training data is full of evil things. [in fiction and movies] the amount of discourse about evil AI completely overshadows the case for good AI. that’s not healthy; we need to avoid a self-fulfilling prophecy,” 𝖦𝗋𝗂𝗆𝖾𝗌 ⏳

“i think everything about copyright is problematic. There’s too much top down control. In the early days of TikTok there was a lot of weird music going viral, but now the gatekeeping stranglehold means less interesting stuff coming out.” 𝖦𝗋𝗂𝗆𝖾𝗌 ⏳

On the subject of generating AI music from deceased artists, “If I was dead I’d really like people to do it,” says 𝖦𝗋𝗂𝗆𝖾𝗌 ⏳. “But I’m not sure everyone would agree. I feel like maybe Prince would’ve been up for it. If it was one of his friends doing it maybe. It’s a tricky one.”

“I think it’s good to have consent [from artists before using their voices via AI]”, says 𝖦𝗋𝗂𝗆𝖾𝗌 ⏳. She wants to lobby platforms like Spotify to start AI sections for generated artist tracks alongside their ‘own’ tracks.

“Why shouldn’t people be able to use my voice? Something cool and beautiful might come from it.” 𝖦𝗋𝗂𝗆𝖾𝗌 ⏳ on her AI collaboration offer. “I think this might be one of the coolest times to be an artist ever. We’re just at the start of the internet.”

“I feel strongly that there’s way too much gatekeeping in music. Copyright sucks. Art is a conversation with everyone that’s come before us. Intertwining it with the ego is a modern concept. The music industry has been defined by lawyers, and that strangles creativity” 𝖦𝗋𝗂𝗆𝖾𝗌 ⏳
