My *full* quote, as I’ve been asked for more context

Also a summary of the The BMA report

I believe we train some of the best, safest, most holistic, & insightful doctors in the world - increasingly I fear it will be the rest of the world that benefits from us

Junior Doctor parents:

*Unpaid parental leave* is a thing worth knowing about.

Up to 4 weeks off/yr (total of 18 until the child is 18)

This is a statutory right but the timing of the leave needs to be negotiated with your employer

I’m not an anaesthetist - I’m a paeds reg.
But I know this feeling and love those shifts! Nothing better than a busy night that just WORKS. With my fave dr & nurse colleagues. Going home knackered with a grin knowing you’ve all done a cracking job & enjoyed each other’s company

This is the message everyone should be taking home from today’s despicable announcement.

The number of people of working age with a health condition or a disability is going up.

And not because they’ve all suddenly become work-shy scroungers🙄

Long (sorry!) 🧵

I've got a plan to get us out of here

reminder: the systems for assessing fitness to work / benefits regularly says people who are terminally ill are fit to work
this just isn’t going to work. gps don’t “want” this work, but patients need a doctor who is their own advocate (not that of the Conservative govt) to do it

This is based on a false premise

who assumes that people who are depressed and anxious are unable to work?

What we actually see is that on stressful, underpaid, overstretched jobs, people who are undervalued become anxious and depressed

Stigma is the machinery of inequality

This makes me so angry. NHS is creaking & crumbling & cannot provide sufficient care for physical or psychiatric illness. I wouldn’t be surprised if people WERE “three times sicker” than a decade ago - it’s in that time everything has changed. Let’s not blame or demonise the sick

I used NHS Practitioner Health when I was suffering with postnatal depression. As part of the feelings of guilt and worthlessness, I was very reticent to seek help as I had a fear of being referred to secondary MH services in my local area, as I work as a psychiatry CT (1/n)

Stewing about this overnight.

What is missing is the acknowledgement that NHS Practitioner Health is a highly specialist service. It deals with one thing and one thing only - traumatised NHS staff.

The notion that standard services (let alone a few free yoga sessions at lunch) are

Today, we struggled to get an ambulance for person with chest pain & deranged observations (I was not at work, wouldn’t tweet about pts, but a bystander in the street trying to help). Took about 45min. Police also took ages to come (not their fault) thanks Conservatives
