With that said, OL are still the most popular players in the portal every year, hands down.

Also true about how there is no template for how teams handle the portal. Such diversity of thought and opinion on it. No way has emerged as dominant yet.

Senior Personnel Executive Jeff Morrow, whose tenure began in '98, no longer appears on the website. If he is no longer in Carolina, it marks the 4th scout (Rob Hanrahan, Tyler Ramsey, Michael Coe) no longer w/the team as GM Dan Morgan retools the front office.

NE Area Scout Michael Coe has parted ways w/the . Coe, who had a 7-yr playing career (plus one year in the CFL), was drafted 5/173 by the in '07 out of Alabama State FB (by way of Arkansas Razorback Football). He also won a Super Bowl w/the in '12 & has TV/radio experience.

Veteran scout Mark Ellenz will not be part of the staff in '24. Ellenz, who joined the team in '22, has also served w/the (as Dir of College Scouting) as well as the (area scout). Also moving on: Alex Smith, who was Asst Director of Pro Scouting.

Meanwhile, there isn't a direct correlation between size of staff and success of team. For example, (largest scouting staff in the league) made the playoffs in '23, but (smallest) went to the Super Bowl as recently as 2022.

One theory on why it’s been such a rocky time for veteran scouts so far: teams are increasingly eager to hire analytics staffers, as we saw last offseason. However, owners don’t want to expand their scouting budgets, so cuts are necessary.

Joe Dever, who spent 5 seasons w/the scouting dept, won't be w/the team in '24. Dever joined Cleveland as a scouting intern in '19 and most recently served as the team's Mid-Atlantic scout. Before joining Cleveland, he coached at John Carroll Football and played at Mercyhurst Football.

-- For this reason, teams typically make decisions on their scouts' contracts post-draft.
