I think many Canadians underestimate both the direct harms from alcohol use and its impact on an already overstressed health care system. Have a read of this commentary - it might change your mind if you think more deregulation is a good thing.

The principles in the Canada Health Act are good ones, but as written it isn’t enough to produce provincial health care systems that provide accessible, comprehensive, universal health care. Definitely time for either an update or an entirely new law.

More people are admitted to hospital for alcohol-related conditions than for heart attacks.

Many people are likely unaware of the carcinogenic effects of alcohol.
