Today is the 160th anniversary of the Great Sheffield Flood when the dam at Dale Dyke reservoir broke.

Over 240 people lost their life as water flooded down the Loxley Valley into Sheffield and beyond. The flood led to important engineering reforms to set new standards for dams.

This year sees the 160th anniversary of The Great Sheffield Flood.
There are countless accounts in the newspaper archives but every now and then you come across one that truly conveys the sense of tragedy. This extract is from The Sheffield Independent - Tuesday 15 March 1864
