For today's Our World in Data Data Insight I calculated how many children died since 1950.

I had never done this before and I was shocked to see just how many lives ended so very early.

A short thread on why this is not a scary chart and why all the evidence suggests that there is not much Covid around right now. 1/6

NEW 🧵:

American politics is in the midst of a racial realignment.

I think this is simultaneously one of the most important social trends in the US today, and one of the most poorly understood.

With death registrations consistently below expectations so far in 2024 I thought I'd take a closer look, as patterns at younger ages get swamped by what's going on with older people.

It's a pretty consistent good news story across the age bands.

There’s a lot of confusion about the new ONS excess deaths methodology. Some thoughts on the model, its limitations and in general.

These are personal views. I don’t speak for ONS or any other organisations or individuals involved in updating the method. 1/17

UK Health Security Agency has now translated its covid prevalence into incidences (a heck of a work)

This allow me to compare the felt severity of covid in England last winter with this winter ... and it's well down!

But this does not necessarily mean it's down world-wide

A quick thread

Important news for those interested in , with the ONS introducing a new methodology that removes the material distortions caused by an ageing and growing population when raw death counts are used.

Flu again looking the principal villain on NHS pressure, versus COVID and RSV. Suspect it's doing enough to move death rates up in the next few weeks.

Why the Pandemic Isn’t Over for Me

“In the way that someone in financial poverty must avoid any extra expenses, in my state of health poverty I will always be forced to budget on a scale that is unimaginable to those in health abundance.” (1/4)

I am so sad to hear of Adele’s passing. We were last in contact on Thursday, and although I was aware the end was close, it is still such a shock to hear that she is no longer with us.
