HHDL speaks on the importance of thinking of the oneness of humanity, how we are the same as human beings, as a way to cultivate warmheartedness towards others in this clip from the archives recorded in Bylakuppe, Karnataka, India on December 25, 2013.

For the record, Oprah supported his case pretty strongly and spoke up about her conviction of his innocence. She also made his book an Oprah's book club selection. It's a great book. You should read it. twitter.com/oprahsbookclub…

Of course I can't bring a camera and of course these are doors I've taken pictures of all over the world. One is several hundred years old, one is in Orwell's cottage, one in a monastic house, one in a military bunker, one in Svalbard. Because I get to roam free.

Through the seventh came my friend handcuffed behind his back; the little dance whereby he gets locked in and offers up his wrists for unlocking in the opening designed for that purpose is so automatic I hardly notice it.

I don't know how many doors he had to come through.

The sixth door is the one you step through to be locked into a cage, which contains two plastic chairs, a plastic table, and a plastic trash can.

Beyond the fifth door is the visiting area, which is two rows of cages of thick wire like cyclone fencing, thicker wire, smaller diamonds, with guards circulating both inside and outside. There are vending machines against one wall and two microwaves for heating things up.

The fourth door is outside the visiting area for Death Row. A guard you cannot see makes it slide remotely . It has no handle. Then you're boxed in in a small space with another door on your left that only the guard, high up behind thick plexiglass, can open.

The third door, once you've passed security--a bit like airport security--lets you out into this wide-open space from which you walk parallel to the shoreline. San Quentin has spectacular views which the prisoners rarely see and the Death Row inmates never--

The second door leads into where the guards screen visitors. The room like every other room I've been to there is somehow miserable in its dimensions and materials, as if the paint congealed rather than dried, always dull colors, worn surfaces, rough textures, a sense of grime.
