Correct. His 2026 and 2027 salaries ($35 million each year) are not guaranteed. It’s understandable why Falcons wouldn’t want to say this out loud but, well, they kinda did by drafting Penix.

Hah. Well I like Penix and l like the short term/long term plan aspect of this at QB. But like others, I struggle with guaranteeing $100 million to Cousins if this was the plan. It’s a strange strategy when it comes to asset spending.

You’re missing the point - 7 of first 15 players in that draft played defense. It was a deep defensive draft.

Everybody screaming that Falcons should’ve taken a defensive player at 8 should note that the first defensive player just went off the board at 15. Says something about the lack of elite talent this draft

And let me add this: nobody should have ever assumed quarterback was off the table for Falcons just because of Cousins’ signing. Cousins is a short term fix to long term problem and he’s coming off a torn ACL.

I told my good friend Zach Klein today that I thought Penix was the best quarterback in the draft and we both heard the same thing — that the Falcons loved him. But eighth is pretty high.

Falcons should trade down but strangely they haven’t asked me.
