2023 REFERENDUM
The referendum question has been defeated.
It was always a big ask to change the Australian Constitution given that since Federation, Australians have only voted to change it eight times.

We can't keep making policies for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people, or doing things to them. We need to work with them. The Voice provides a way of getting direct input from Indigenous people into the policies and laws that affect them.

The Voice will be comprised of Indigenous men and women in equal numbers, drawn from every state and territory. Special seats will be reserved for remote communities. Local and regional bodies will nominate members to sit on the national body.

The referendum amendment will establish a body that can be changed by parliament when necessary to meet the circumstances that Indigenous people and the rest of the community find themselves in.
