Last day in O'ahu spent visiting to hear from islanders' campaigning to reclaim the Āina (land) & heal the scars left by the military base. It may look beautiful, but this land has been repeatedly bombed & exposed to chemicals. There is much healing to do.

My turn today at & I'll be talking about my favourite subject: the Scottish islands & their communities!

Huge thx to the 500+ folk with island connections who took part in my research. It's an honour to tell your stories.

Also:
'You live in an island, what do you expect?' from external folk is a common frustration.

Which, of course, ignores the fact that structures & systems of modern society are based on centralised urban models. Its these structures / systems that need review, not our location.

From Gozo to the Galapagos, from the under-reporting women's roles in the community to the lack of people in island images - lots of common ground that Scottish islanders may recognise in today's sessions at
American Association of Geographers

Session one of (working with communities) and I randomly sit next to a fellow islander. I tell ya, we gravitate towards each other like we are pulled with the tides.

American hotel breakfast buffet verdict:

Hot sauce is a win and should absolutely be added to all breakfast options.

Raspberry yoghurt should not be chemical pink...

Also, this is your occasional reminder that if your policy has to include exceptions for rural areas, it is an urban-centric policy.

Here's the thing.

It's not just that rural / island places work differently to urban areas, it's also that they're not aiming to be urban areas.

Instead of trying to impose urban standards in an effort to 'improve' them, start looking for the opportunity in these differences.

Great thread explaining how wood burners can be an important part of achieving net zero *and* a Just Transition for rural areas.

I am fed up of the arguing. I am fed up of the fact rural and Island places work differently being ignored in policy.

Day 1 of 3.5 of travel to Hawaii:

On the plus side, I am actually on the mainland where I am supposed to be.

On the minus side I managed to spill tea down my light top on the 2nd ferry and am trying to soak the stain out and dry it in a radiator before the next leg tomorrow....

Holyrood Sources Andy Maciver What makes the perception in H&I 100 X worse is that every time policy concerns are raised, they are brushed aside or mainsplained away as:
- ignorance ('we did a consultation')
- result of misinformation ('bY tHe mEdiA')
- 'culture wars' (really? about a stove?) alexmassie :

Currently on a ferry heading to the mainland. This used to be something I took for granted was possible. You never know these days.

It *was* 30mins late leaving, went from the wrong port, & there've recently been berthing delays mainland side. But still. I'm on a moving ferry...

(I suppose now is a good time to recall the time I was snowed in during a four-day power cut in Shetland, and only kept warm using my neighbour's wood stove and fireplace. Not sure people realise how vulnerable island life can be, even with full infrastructure!)

I'm supposed to be going to Hawai'i for work, but I can't begin to look fwd to it til I'm safely on the mainland.

Travel plans have already changed as we're down to a single vessel, and now all sailings up until the one I'm due to leave on tomorrow cancelled. Keep your🤞for me!
