On behalf of many (I think), the ICMJE standards for authorship refer to “substantial contributions”. There aren’t exceptions for “you were paid”, “you are a statistician”, or “you aren’t an academic”. Assessing “substantial” can be hard, but these aren’t categorical exclusions.

Relevant to any clinical trial trying to estimate subpopulation effects as well (basket trials for example). Similar issues in terms of reduced sample size in the subgroup, smaller expected differences etc

I regret missing this gem from U.S. FDA on Bayesian hierarchical models. This article discusses shrinkage estimation for subgroups. Hierarchical models are fundamental to basket trials, meta-analyses, historical borrowing, and many other RCT applications.
