An absolute joy to die on my arse tonight for the greater glory of Andrew Gower and the mighty Gustaffson . What a band! What a room! What a chillingly theatrical set I chose to perform to a chatty crowd of music fans!

Tour Day 18

Railway Station 32: Chorley.

Chorley you can't be serious?! A small and undramatic station, undergoing an exciting revamp. Wrong side o't' Pennines, of course, but I shall give 'em me best.

Tour Day 16

Railway Station 31: London Victoria. I can't say I love it. It's rambling and lacks a clear story, though high marks for the plant-filled loos and solid bus interchange.

Lunch 13: Dhal + roti from Gopal's Corner.

Seat 32: A sleepy table on the 1332 to Brighton.

Tour Day 16

Railway Station 30: London Paddington. No mucking about, Paddington is mighty. Great to see it thriving in the Elizabeth Line era, especially as my grandad used to run the train operations here.

Tour Day 16

Seat 31: B20. Panic over. The late-finishing engineering works only delayed the 1013 to Paddington by ten minutes, so there's no need for the people of Brighton to panic - tonight's show should just about be possible.

Tour Day 16

Railway Station 29: Bath Spa. He alights, he marvels at the beautiful stone and the sympathetic Great Western colour scheme complementing the green hills and woods, he looks up at the departures board and sees ALL LONDON TRAINS DELAYED UNTIL FURTHER NOTICE.

Tour Day 16

Railway Station 28: Bradford-on-Avon. With Bath hosting its half-marathon this weekend, there was no room at the inn. So instead, we had a charming overnight diversion up to The Other Bradford. A GWR delight.

Seat 30. A57 YES! A Class 800 on the Wessex Main Line!

Tour Day 15

Railway Station 26: Oxford. For such a marvellous city, the station's always a sad anticlimax. No sign, no British Rail symbol, Molly says it looks like a swimming baths.

Lunch 12: (Technically brunch) Huevos rancheros at The Handlebar

Seat 29: Nice moquette, GWR

Tour Day 13

Railway Station 25: Reading. The mighty Gateway To The West, Terminus Of Crossrail, a multi-million multi-platform monster and it's great. Bustle bustle bustle in the never-quite-a-city. Still, the nostalgic in me can't help miss the roar of the HSTs.

Tour Day 13

Railway Station 24: Wolverhampton.

Being brutal, a dog's breakfast. Being kind, a scrappy hodgepodge. Unloved and unlovable platform infrastructure gives way to a bright modern concourse + tram interchange, and who couldn't fall for the charming footbridge murals?

Tour Day 13

Railway Station 6a: Liverpool Lime Street, 2nd visit. Another rerun here, and more than welcome. Such a spectacular sweep from train shed to city. Light everywhere.

Seat 27: A dilemma on the 0933 to Wolverhampton. No luggage racks other than near priority seats! 😬

Tour Day 13

Railway Station 8a: Birkenhead Hamilton Square, 2nd visit. Disembarking my overnight ferry from Belfast, it's back onto the rail network at this secretive beauty.

Railway Station 23: Liverpool Central. A grand name for a low-key shopping mall vibe.

Tour Day 12

Ferry Terminal 2: Belfast Victoria Terminal 2. New and modern and shiny and bright, starting my journey to Liverpool through the night.

Seat 25: Cabin 867 aboard the Stena Embla. A cosy and windowless place to spend 8 hours. Can't wait.

Tour Day 12

Bus Station 2: Belfast Europa. Efficient, undramatic, doomed. Soon to be replaced with the integrated transport hub 'Belfast Grand Central'. I'm two years too soon!

Lunch 11: Boxty with Vegan Chicken. Wow. A fab Northern Irish delicacy, courtesy The Thirsty Goat.

Tour Day 12

Ferry Terminal 1: Cairnryan. Its existence seems to have killed Stranraer, but man they can load a ferry fast here. We left early.

Seat 24: Raced to a window table in the Deck 8 Living Room aboard the good ship Stena Superfast VIII. Pretty chuffed. See you soon, NI!
