This was a FUN meeting.

CZI offered the opportunity for us to present our science outreach work and created a safe space with mentors in our fields.

And… provided unlimited sparkling water and skittles! Anyone who knows my snacking habits, knows I lived a dream! lol 😂

Last week, our HHMI NEWS researchers visited @kizzyphd’s old stomping grounds, NIAID VRC, for neutralization assay bootcamp! Thanks to Nicole, Sijy, and Lingshu for their hospitality!

Thousands of sera samples from our new experiments? No problem! We’re ready!!! ✨

It actually wasn’t. Thalidomide was rejected for approval by the FDA due to lack of sufficient safety studies. This rejection was mostly thanks to Frances Oldham Kelsey, who stood firm on the rejection despite pressure from Big Pharma. European countries did not do the same. So,…

Fun fact: My first research project ever (16 years old) was in a chemistry lab that worked on enantiomer (2 mirror-image sides of one chemical) separation, techniques that pioneered drug development after the Thalidomide disaster.

Let me tell you why ongoing multidisciplinary collabs are so important.

I saw a talk recently where a graph hinted that the PI had a gold mine of untapped samples that Lab of Kizzmekia Corbett (@kizzyphd) could use. Turns out, they threw the samples out cause they don’t study viruses. *tears* 😭

Ask Twitter: Is it true statistically that the biggest financial struggle period for labs is immediately after a PI gets tenure?

I’ve heard this twice anecdotally and can’t find NIH grant stats or the like to confirm.

This is my goal as the lead of @masscpr’s new “Community Health and Engagement” subgroup.

Biologists often take from communities w/o giving much back, don’t listen to the needs of the community, etc.

We are missioned to change that dynamic — giving more than we receive. 💛
