Thanks to the The Telegraph’s Maeve Cullinan & Sarah Newey for the opportunity to discuss #H5N1 screening in the #UK
“My question for Defra is ‘how can they be sure?’ If they’re not testing, then they cannot say for certain that the cows don’t have H5N1 – they could be asymptomatic”
As an ID physician, I completely agree - please do not consume raw milk
Not only could doing so put you are risk for #H5N1 but you are also at risk for #Campylobacter , #Salmonella , #Brucella , #Listeria and many other infectious diseases which cause severe disease of death.
Preprint “ Highly pathogenic avian influenza A (H5N1) clade 2.3.4.4b virus detected in dairy cattle”. These viruses show mutations in the attachment protein, hemagglutinin, that are important for the virus to become efficiently transmissible among people.

Great points by Isabella Eckerle on the detection of #Influenza A in wastewater in #Texas .
Lots of things could be contributing to this spike, and we need more information.
Will be helpful if we distinguish #H5N1 in the wastewater.
Excited for the opportunity to talk all things spit with Rachel Louise Byrne at #ESCMIDGlobal2024 this afternoon
Michael Worobey Critical need for clinical & epidemiological data on human cases of H5N1, clinical syndrome including investigations, dynamic sampling, viral sequence & clearance dynamics & PK/PD of treatment
