Fancy having a go at hands-on archaeology? There is a great opportunity over the weekend of 20-21 April. Volunteers are needed to help dig test pits in the village of Shenton and explore its medieval history. You don't need to have any previous experience and its great fun!

Includes the technical challenges of a range of lighting conditions and cramped work spaces, encounters with the Queen's Policeman and the famous Budge (Norwich Cathedral cat), plus the Indiana Jones moment in a big warehouse of very old things.

Excellent news. Even the earliest VCH volumes (pre 1914) contain a lot of information that remains relevant today, sometimes for projects the authors would not have envisaged.

This gateway to College was built and gifted anonymously in 1933 by William Bastard, chair of governors in 1934 & 1936. The identity of the donor was not revealed until 1937, after his death, when a plaque was unveiled and they became known as the Bastard Gates.

Interesting blog post, and what a great book cover! Many, many hours go into producing the text for such books, it's a huge task even with decent palaeography skills. The inventory I was looking at yesterday included (I think) a quern (hand mill), spelled cworne
