Stories like this surge short term sales. But there have been indicators since the 90's that they do so at a cost to long term readership retention. The value of sensational stories is a very poorly supplied well that has now been overdrawn to a dangerous degree...

Years ago... I remember sitting at a mixer thing at a con in Michigan, and an angry fan ranted that he knew how to fix Superman. His opinion - Superman had to fail - on a massive level. He basically predicted Injustice Superman.

But that Superman is functionally a new character.

We are seeing attempts to normalize AI coming from every imaginable commercial venture. Unsurprising. Companies hoping to lower product costs will attempt to circumvent paying people for their labor.

An art gallery doesn’t even have that excuse.

@thedeyoungmuseum Rethink this.

Working on corporate owned comics, you know that the exciting stories transpire when you engage in something that breaks the boundaries that character exists in. You want Superman to kill? Batman to die? Characters to change? Evolve? Easy. Those stories are the easiest to tell.

Who are the comics - the corporate held, mainstream superheroes - for? We see a constant barrage of 20's-somethings hungry to see the heroes they grew up with age with them. They will get angry if you suggest the children's property they loved as a child is... for children.

The problem is that someone has to continue selling stories with that character. Superman has to go back to holding the moral authority of his world. Batman has to not be dead. The character that grew and changed and evolved? That progression can be a hinderance.

Hey de Young Museum - AI “art” only exists because programs have been fed the work of actual artists - mostly without consent. By allowing it in your gallery, you legitimize the amoral appropriation of art and the infringement on artists rights.

Rethink this.

And those stories - because they are so sensational and they do drive up short term sales - become the stories that fuel the next generation of creative individuals. And the next, and the next, ever pushing the dynamic of storytelling further into an unsustainable direction...

Reboot fatigue, event fatigue, grim-and grittier, etc...

This was the subtext of Danger Club, a look at an industry run by hungry corporations endlessly consuming and regurgitating their own properties.

nepo baby Levels of poverty?' One 'level' is a lack of choice. The other is a matter of facing the consequences of your choice to spend excessively. These are not the same, and comparing them is gross.

It's a challenge to tell a story where the protagonist sits perpetually on a knife's edge, always in a state of adolescent-fueled crisis... While still making the reader feel they had a complete story - but that they still need to buy next months story.

Steve Flack There is a value in this. But that said, all my friends who have kids... I always ask them their opinions. They are very bored with multiverses. They roll their eyes at multiverses now. To them it's played out. The rabbit is already out of the hat and wandering around the stage.

The real-world grim and gritty Batman reboot I keep waiting for - the one that takes everything to the most realistic - is the one where Bruce Wayne defeats the Riddler by using a bank he owns to foreclose on the Riddler's moms house.

...until one day the readers have moved on. They aren't shocked by the death of a beloved character. They have seen the hero who swore never to kill murder a city. They have read the final final final crisis and are unmoved by the most final of crisis' that follows.
