I couldn't agree more. 'Essential Functions of the Job with/without reasonable accommodations' is what the law says.

Would be nice if folks remembered it given how hard folks fought for it.

This is great news UCLA -- a first-ever studies major!! Its launch is a victory in the ongoing battle for understanding & breaking down stereotypes. Kudos to advocates, educators, and students who made this happen.

So what can you do if you witness a guide dog or assistance dog handler being refused service or access to a business?

First speak up, ask if they want support stating the law, filming the interaction or acting as a witness.

Give them your details & offer to support a complaint

I calmly & politely explained the legal & PR consequences of ejecting us.

Then I stated “this conversation is over” & the manager left.

Little One scrambled around the ball pit blissfully unaware.

Hilariously Ava can be seen sleeping throughout the video.

Luckily, I’ve experienced this situation dozens of times in 3 years so I am able to confidently assert my rights.

This is not the case for every assistance dog handler & we shouldn’t have to defend our access rights.

The responsibility is with the business to train staff.

So I started filming, I won’t share the video yet.

I explained I was filming as evidence that the conversation had taken place & that I had explained the law to the staff.

I explained the equality act, the access rights of assistance dogs & the illegality of their actions.

Over an hour into our session, a member of staff approached identifying themselves as a manager & stating “the dog has to go outside”.

I calmly & politely said “no she is a guide dog, she has a legal right of access.”

Unfortunately the manager insisted Ava had to leave.

DOJ’s Civil Rights Division is enforcing our civil rights laws on behalf of all protected communities everywhere. Makes all the difference to have a tremendous civil rights lawyer like Kristen Clarke leading the Division.

Today, the U.S. Supreme Court will hear oral arguments to determine whether or not a disabled person acting as a tester should be able to challenge ADA violations in court.

If we lose tester standing, how will we enforce our rights?

We must

2. U.S. Department of Labor will examine the future viability of section 14c, which allows segregated subminimum wage employment of disabled folks.
