Thrilled to have had this opportunity to interview library director Rose Dawson for our New America New AmericaEd series on the Alexandria Library sit-in of 1939.
It is inspiring to read Natasha Tarpley's words here in New America's magazine. And I'm excited to see her new work, such as her children’s mystery podcast, Opal Watson: Private Eye, which featured an 11-year-old African American girl detective.
Cheers to all the wonderful Alexandria City Public Schools teachers this week. You make our worlds go ‘round 🫶🏼
Big congratulations to our Learning Sciences Exchange (LSX) Fellow Andrea Goldin andre.goldin for winning 1st place in this book competition, with her book (in Spanish): Neuroscience at the school. A friendly guide (and without blah blah) to understand how the brain works during learning. Huge!
Couldn't agree more ted dintersmith. The critical role that librarians & #mediamentors play becomes more apparent every day. They can help youth and parents select & filter what they see and read, online or off, in customized ways. So distressing to see libraries now being defunded.
Decent advice but misses the all-important point that anything in books that the banners find objectionable can be found online, often in far more insidious or explicit forms. Curious kids will find it, and it’s much better to have a librarian in the loop. washingtonpost.com/opinions/2023/…

.Carol Lautenbach shares her on-the-ground experience bringing science-based learning to a school district in Michigan: Educators were involved from the beginning. This isn’t something that was done to people—they came along the way. #MakingSchoolsWork
