Extraordinarily powerful NEJM graphic piece illustrating the hidden crisis of family caregiving, and the disproportionate toll it takes on women: nejm.org/doi/full/10.10…

Everyone has a role to play in better supporting unpaid family caregivers.

We can and must do better.

All my patients are asking when/whether to get the new booster. See below for the take of two of my most reliable sources Bob Wachter agreeing with Katelyn Jetelina. If you follow news and don't follow them, you are missing out!

The problem is that old age is different than other life stages. Most 2 or 22 or 42 year olds are the same. Not so for 82 year olds. So chronologic age because a much less useful or precise metric. It's about functional status and that varies most in old age.

Disconcerting. Clearly, our messages regarding abolishing & separating chronological age from level of competence aren't getting through to enough people. We have to keep calling out such ignorant, sensational journalism whenever we encounter it!

Family caregiving and employment: Often not a compatible combination. I wrote about new research showing that eldercare can drive workers out of the labor force for years, or for good, with ongoing repercussions for caregivers, employers, the economy. nytimes.com/2022/09/04/sci…

My question for those in , esp those in , do you have access to primary care too? Can people see specialists in weeks to months, not longer? In all major centers are closed to primary care or backed up into 2023. It's horrific for patients.

I hesitate to criticize CDC. It is full of bright, hardworking career scientists, & critique of policy gets conflated with critique of them. That said, I find the latest flawed. It sacrifices the vulnerable, offers false reassurance, & ignores inconvenient data.

The CDC doubles down on its flawed, not evidence based Covid recommendations with a new guidance document
1. Leaves fully vaccinated = 2 shots, stay 'up to date'
2. Leaves isolation at 5 days w/o rapid tests
3. Pushes 'community levels' when real info is 'transmission levels'

I'm honored to have been quoted in this important piece by Paula Span. How do you feel about our society's lack of rituals honoring the passage from adulthood to elderhood?
