NEW report: Jail populations have exploded over the last 4 decades while getting almost none of the attention prisons do.

It’s clear the US has a reliance on excessive jailing. But how did we get here? 🧵

winning a deportation case takes everything, and even then, that often isn’t enough. the people I defend are humans, I am a human, yet deportation law and courts are so profoundly, deliberately dehumanizing. i’m just never over it.

We gotta get housing figured out. It’ll decrease substance use disorder, crime, childhood trauma, learning disruption, medical assistance costs, unemployment, prison costs…

Landlords’ profits aren’t worth all this mess.

An important stat for anyone covering Trump’s “immigrants are criminals” rallies today: immigrants are 60% less likely to be incarcerated for crimes than U.S. born citizens.

Since George Floyd was murdered, the police killed more people in 2021 than 2020, more people in 2022 than 2021, and more people in 2023 than 2022. The only solution is reducing the size and power of the policing bureaucracy, and investing in root causes of interpersonal harm.

A single brazen theft caught on video at Walgreens gets national attention meanwhile these crimes go entirely unreported. Ask yourself why the national press wants you to know about one and not the other.

Thread: The New York Times just revealed Israeli military’s AI facial recognition surveillance in Gaza. But it might surprise people that the same companies behind biometric surveillance for right-wing govt’s in India + Israel just got secretive contract in Los Angeles.

I wish we were able to get to know more about the migrant workers that passed instead of being told how they were hard workers. What was their favorite food? What were their dreams? Who was their favorite artist?

Georgia has passed a law forbidding bail funds from contributing to people's bonds.

It is worth noting that when MLK was bailed out of Birminghan jail, he didn't fund his own bond. The United Auto Workers, and others, pooled tens of thousands of dollars to liberate him.

NY—where Kalief Browder was imprisoned 3 years on an alleged stolen backpack—Trump gets his $450M bond reduced to $175M.

TX—where Crystal Mason was imprisoned 5 years for trying to vote—Paxton gets 0 prison for securities fraud.

The system ain't broken—it's working as intended.

This is how all journalists should report on public health and safety issues. Instead of transcribing police press releases, go to court & see up close how “justice” really works. You’ll learn a lot, report with more nuance, & added bonus, get tons of scoops.

Narratives implying that the desert is inherently deadly ignore the primary factor in death and disappearance in the borderlands: a militarized border zone in which a whole category of people is treated as less than human.

Any criminologist worth their salt will tell you that recidivism measures the behavior of the system, not the behavior of criminalized people

Every morning, I wake up & see another outlet peddling misinformation about bail reform, which has saved taxpayers hundreds of millions in unnecessary pretrial detention, kept 100000s together, w/o connection to any crime increase. This morning, 2 white women lamenting freedom:

Sheriffs are jailers.

They run jails.

They do not and should not run

Housing programs

Treatment programs

Diversion programs

Yet they think they do because we have given them too many people from our communities who need too much, too much money, and too much control

Waitaminute. You’re telling me that the increases in retail theft are not necessarily due to liberal pro-crime politicians and doom loops but instead the ability to safely and efficiently fence stolen goods through Amazon????

The right wing uses anecdotal incidents of crime and dramatic video images to create a false media narrative about a so-called “crime wave,” when in reality crime was actually higher when Trump was president than it is now.

'I wouldn't even have a criminal record if it wasn't for the fact that I was homeless.'

Dullani's story is not unique. People are being arrested every day for experiencing homelessness, and in April the Supreme Court will decide whether that's constitutional.
