When we study the educational experiences that the wealthy want for their children; choice, creativity, autonomy..

When we study the experiences that are often mandated for marginalized youth; sit still, walk in a line, don't talk.

We can question & interrupt this. We must.❤️

Preview of Eve L. Ewing used to go by wikipedia brown’s forthcoming book on school closings: “Parents and community members also weren’t pleased at the insistent focus on numbers, as if schools were only machines meant to pump out results.” southsideweekly.com/more-than-a-sc…

Also be sure to check out Jack Schneider's presentation. Especially the alternative approach he provides on slide 10. As he says, 'What Makes a School Great? Not demography, not just scores, not ranking.' But 'Helping young people develop their full potential.'

We really need to reject the CPS school rating system (which dates to before 2008, btw). This article has so much important info, but the constant reference to the school ratings as if they actually reflect the strengths of a school, is very problematic. blockclubchicago.org/2018/07/24/as-…

Please stop rewarding good attendance in schools. It’s great for those with good health but discriminating and demoralising for those who haven’t. My 12 year old who takes daily chemotherapy for leukaemia has 83% attendance this year. I am proud. He thinks his school isn’t.

This weekend I sorted through some papers my mom saved from my childhood. The top one is my 4th grade self evaluation. The bottom, my 4th grade state test score. Random House published my 6th book last week.

@spolos @gailDrich Rosemarie Jensen, M.Ed. Elizabeth Lynch Susan DuFresne CriticalClassrooms Anthony Cody☮️ Jeremiah Henderson I just came back from a tour of August Wilson’s homesite in Pittsburgh. His teacher accused him of plagiarism. He never went back to school. Not only should we oppose testing, we need to oppose harsh, unforgiving schooling.

What should we do instead of punishing young people? Love them, focus on justice & create joyful places for them to exist

Eve L. Ewing used to go by wikipedia brown in my grade school experience, any advocacy on behalf of students that remotely went against the administration would result in disciplinary action or threat of it. and then we wonder why young people aren't civically engaged or participating in democracy once they graduate
