One of the first signs of spring is the flowering of the willows! Shining Willow is a tall shrub or short tree with smooth, glossy leaves. The yellow flower clusters attract queen bees, which eat the pollen for nourishment after their long winter hibernation.

Glandular Birch is a common shrub in moist areas of northern Manitoba. The twigs are covered with large resin glands that give it a pleasant scent. The wind-pollinated flowers bloom in early spring, and are arranged in clusters called catkins.
