It's often somewhat niche English or Social Science PhDs that are used to deride academia and its value, but I remember that one of my uni housemates did a fully funded PhD in pure mathematics, that largely amounted to whether you could write an equation slightly differently

Not just fascinating in and of itself, but of immediate relevance to all kind of contemporary issues — fantasies of illimitable natural resources; how we age; how we frame sustainability and equilibrium, individually, socially, naturally; how we live with and frame disability…

Or to put it another way, to limit the chances of people being able to access legal assistance, and thereby be denied a fundamental right which everyone else would expect to be guaranteed. Also, not a new tactic from the Home Office.
