Development files for Super Mario 64 contain an early model of the Mr. Blizzard snowman enemy that, due to missing color data, appears with yellowish green gradients. While completely unintended, this makes it appear cactus-themed, accidentally creating a plausible enemy design.

The demo for Super Mario 3D World + Bowser's Fury contains an unused enemy called TestBoid, a flock of Para-Biddybuds as 'boids', a programming term referring to objects with bird-like behavior. The boids form a flock that protects a central 'load-bearing boid'.

In Super Mario Galaxy, character lighting is based on camera direction for the 'rim lighting' effect. If characters are facing away from the camera and 60° to the left, they will be looking directly into the light, which completely annihilates their irises with its brightness.

In Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door, whenever Mario enters a building, all NPCs outside of it turn invisible as the outdoor area is darkened. If glitches are used to clip outside and talk to them, it will appear as though the speech bubble is coming from Mario instead.

Game Boy Advance games store their audio samples as uncompressed data in the code. By importing a GBA game file in an audio editor, these can be heard directly. Below is an excerpt of Wario Land 4 being listened to in an audio editor.

New Super Mario Bros. contains an unused 'space frolic' mode for Mario, whereby he will use a unique walking animation called 'zero_g_walk' and behave as though in low gravity while skipping around.

Super Mario Maker players are familiar with 'dev blocks', blocks used by developers that contain items or shortcuts to quickly beat their own levels. Super Mario Land contains an unused dev block, which releases a platform that simply takes Mario straight to the end of the level.

In Super Mario World, Mode 7 boss battles appear to have backgrounds even though this should be, on a technical level, literally impossible. This is done by using sprites to 'fake' a simplistic background layer. Details in image.

In Super Mario Odyssey, if glitches are used to take the 'MARIO' letters in the Metro Kingdom outside of their intended area, they can be used to push New Donkers off ledges. The New Donkers are, however, unaffected by gravity and will simply stand in mid-air, unbothered.

In Super Paper Mario, Back Cursyas are frustrating enemies that send Mario out of an area when touched. The game contains an entry for an unused 'Dark Back Cursya' that, had it been implemented, would have easily become known as one of the most unfair moments in a Mario game.

In Super Mario Galaxy, Mandibugs invade the bee kingdom. Flipbugs, the smallest Mandibugs, are so weak that they're afraid of Mario; however, they will attack him when he is Bee Mario. This seems to imply that their hate for bees is so strong that it overpowers their fear.

Mario & Luigi: Bowser's Inside Story contains an unused 'ominous pipe room' in its files. The room contains a single pipe, and plays the dramatic 'Shock!' music heard below. Entering the pipe turns off the game's graphics, leaving both screens completely dark.
