.SochaLab member Jeff did a great job in this video, his first appearance on the news here. We were asked to weigh in on local snakes and what to do if bitten, and Jeff stepped up.

This wild thing is the polychaete worm Chaetopterus variopedatus, which lives in an opaque burrow, but nevertheless emits blue light (the red is from an LED). The species name is because its parapodia (feet) are specialized for different functions as you go down the body.

The 2nd chapter of my PhD just got published (OA✅) in Paleobiology w/ P. Bishop, H. Tsai and my former supervisors Professor John R. Hutchinson & Alexandra Houssaye!
We show there was only one way to become a giant bipedal dinosaur by studying a lot of theropod femora!🦖

This is a side-view of the hyperiid amphipod Phronima that highlights its impressive claws and the fact that it has two pairs of eyes. It also shows its pigmentation, which is interesting because the animal goes between clear and quite brown for reasons I don't understand.

I've said it a bunch of times. You know where specimens go after being collected by research expeditions? MUSEUMS. The South Australian Museum is no different. Long term specimen records and new species reside in those collections. Undescribed in Australian waters!

This is Homo sapiens, specifically my former graduate student Jamie Fergus, on what we call a 'blue-water dive'. This is scuba diving in the open ocean, typically over a hundred miles from land and over bottoms that may be 10,000 feet below. Visibility can be well over 100 feet.

Can this ghost embryo look any more like an actual ghost?! We have wonderful undergraduate researchers in the lab; this amazing image was taken by Campbell Al-Khafaji - showing a stage 29 Australian Ghost Shark (Callorhinchus milii; chimaera) embryo head - watching you! 👻🦈🔥
