When a very active, athletic 3rd grade boy tells you that he chose missing recess over missing my math group as a consequence, you feel like you are doing something right.

*The teacher chose the consequences not me.

A student made this which one doesnā€™t belong. At first I wasnā€™t sure but when he explained it I thought he did a great job! Can you tell why they donā€™t belong? ā¦I Am CPSā© ā¦Jamie Riesterā© ā¦Becki Arlingtonā© ā¦Dawn Williamsā© ā¦Emily Campbellā©

A7: we read books that look like my students on occasion. That are little posters that look like my students in my work space. It is great when they ask about them.

A5: a lot of work on mindset in the beginning of the year. Celebrating what they are doing correctly and their mistakes. I thank students for mistakes and the learning we got to experience. I also donā€™t give grades just feedback.

A4-my Ss attack problems in various ways and then we connect different approaches. At the beginning of the year I focus on what they do well and then tell them the one thing I want them to do next to improve PS. Now they attempt problems and share proudly.

A3: wodb, I feel Steve Wyborneyā€™s work has a lot of this. Letting kids explore problems on their own with various materials. Also students draw pictures of word problems to show that they understand the problem.

A2-I believe one is good at mathematics if they can think flexibly and in multiple ways on how to approach a problem. They see patterns and relationships. They can do the SMPs well.

A1-I do my best to make sure all my kids know that they CAN do math. We all just learn it at different rates and how we like solving problems.

A1-I think it might be easier to say where I donā€™t hear it. šŸ˜ That answer is pretty much only when Iā€™m with my math friends.

I love spring. You get to see your students blossom.

Today two young ladies who would not speak and definitely did not volunteer to answer anything 8 months ago were raising their thumbs and sharing thinking proudly. Smiles were big for all!

A lesson on why you ask your students how they got their answer.

Me: tell me your thinking.
S: 1+2 is 3. 2+4 is 6. So itā€™s 36.
Me: šŸ˜³šŸ˜±
Me: Letā€™s talk about place value.

We were so excited to have Fawn Nguyen be one of our keynote speakers OCTM conference!

Tracy Johnston Zager I did not take her on any adventures on the curviest roads I could stumble upon. šŸ¤Ŗ

A6: Ss would see 6 rows of 5 and 6 rows of 4. Others would see 9 columns of 6. Others would see 10 columns of 6 minus 1 column of 6.

A5: I think that memorizing without understanding becomes overwhelming. They have nothing to fall back on when they forget the rule or algorithm. Those with conceptual understanding and flexible fluency have ideas to try and make connections.
