🔴HITCHIN: source says Alistair Strathern, who won Mid Bedfordshire by-election for Labour, was being photographed in centre of Hitchin today. I wonder if he's switching to new Hitchin seat at general election? Hitchin has almost 20% of old Mid Beds, & is better bet for Labour.

A podcast about my work for @tomorrowsMPs and my views on the selection if parliamentary candidates. It was great fun to do.

My advice to people reporting US politics to a UK audience: don't ever use the term 'middle class'. It's confusing & misleading. 'Middle class' in the US means a significantly different range of people to what 'middle class' means in Britain.

The poll of polls for every month throughout 1996 had Labour on at least 50%. The final Labour vote in May 1997 was 43.2%.

Sir Jim Ratcliffe today met members of MUST, the Manchester United Supporters' Trust, and stressed that his investment in United wasn't about making money. Bravo on both counts.

I'm a bit surprised, John, that in so valiantly defending Ed Davey over the Post Office, you don't tell your almost 300,000 followers that you're currently trying to become a Lib Dem MP.
How did the hustings for the Hamble Valley seat go last Wednesday? Quite well, I hear.

Wow. Sir Geoff Mulgan should be upgraded to a peerage, and the people who ignored his advice banned from any future peerage or honours.

🔵 EPSOM & EWELL: I think the long-list interviews to be Conservative candidate were held yesterday. Can anyone DM me please with details of who made the shortlist?

🟠 HAMBLE VALLEY: a source tells me, John, that you were on the shortlist at the Lib Dem hustings for the new Hamble Valley constituency on Wednesday. Surely not? But it could explain that hat, I suppose.

And if Davey said that on legal advice - which is one theory - I'd love to know who his lawyers were - partly so I and others can avoid them if we ever get into trouble.

Paddy Ashdown would never have handled it like that; nor Charles Kennedy; nor Ming Campbell; nor Nick Clegg, nor Tim Farron, who was superbly sympathetic in one of his letters to a suffering sub-postmaster last week.

But also the Post Office scandal is a moment to make non-exec directors more effective - outsiders who are more challenging to weak and/or dishonest executives. And it's an area one can improve for very little cost.

Another reform the government should make is to give all sub-postmasters a few shares in the Post Office. That way they can confront management & directors at AGMs, and might have tackled this scandal much sooner.

If I were Prime Minister I would appoint a troubleshooter in Downing Street whose job it would be to spot scandals like the Post Office early on, and stop them. One duty would be to read Private Eye every issue, and the trade press.

Ten days after the ITV Post Office drama was first broadcast, not a single member of the Post Office board of directors in that time - so far as I am aware - chairs, executives, non-execs - has had the decency, the courage, the humility, to do a broadcast interview on the scandal

Further fun & games in Bolton Labour Party. Bernadette Gallagher, former secretary of the Bolton North East constituency party, has been officially expelled for liking tweets posted by left-wing Breakthrough Party. No, I haven't heard of them either.
