Wednesday is the first anniversary of my husband’s death. A friend put flowers in the sanctuary in his memory. Two others embraced me tenderly when the last hymn, Blessed Assurance, overwhelmed me. The minister offering communion shared my tear-rimmed eyes. This is Church.

My grandkids and I were recently talking about my church youth group in the 1960s. I told them that one of my favorite outings was when we’d go to the observation deck at Love Field airport in Dallas to watch planes take off and land. 😂

One friend is battling cancer. Another has an eye disease and cannot drive. The third has severe anemia and just got out of the hospital. Three of us road tripped to take lunch to the other in Waco. We need each other to lift one another up!

An observation: How a pastor tends to the spiritual needs of older adults, especially frail elderly, says a lot about their own spiritual maturity.

Tomorrow I’m taking two friends, ages 90 and 86, to Waco to visit another
friend who is 87 and recently moved to be near her daughter. We are taking lunch and all the paper goods. Do everything you can to keep older adults connected as they age!

What a lovely morning speaking at University Park United Methodist Church’s School of Essential Wisdom. My topic was life lessons from the sea, and I used my book Beach Calling as the primary resource. It’s a gentle way to think about aging.

Rev. Stuart Briscoe encourages us to consider that 'physical wasting away' and 'spiritual renewal' might be equal and opposite realities. Something to ponder on this journey of aging

Following the death of my beloved husband almost a year ago, I decided to move from DFW to be near my son’s family in Wimberley in the TX Hill Country. I’m building a cottage there. As I clean out cabinets & closets, I leave them empty except for essentials. Guess I am glamping!
