Labour's collapse was nationwide, National's win was local. A look at the preliminary vote data:

Luxon on Morning Report:

'I'm going to respect other parties and negotiations and that's why I'm not ruling in or out a referendum on the Treaty'

'Yes, we will be going ahead with tax cuts (subject to econ conditions)'

Interesting what falls under 'respect' and what doesn't

john campbell is the king of the live election broadcast - across all the information, across everything happening in the studio and the field, and a bundle of energy for 5 hours straight. this is what peak performance looks like

The contrast between Auckland and Melbourne fascinates me. Both had extended lockdowns under Labo(u)r. Auckland seems to have whacked Labour, while Melbourne returned Labor handily. Suspect it has something to do with ALP delivering infra and NZ Labour, well, not (hi light rail!)

assuming the specials break as Edge reasonably calculates, and perhaps assuming TPM pick up another electorate causing an overhang, national and act will be quite a bit further from government than last night’s result suggested ???

it would be so funny if labour binned chippy because he ruled out winston and then nzf and the ute man (king kieran mcanulty) ran the most pro-provincial government in new zealand history. one PGF per province

just as awanuiārangi sailed around the wellington coast, naming landmarks and leaving descendants, the proper order has returned to wellington central with the election of tamatha paul of the superior tribe of awanuiārangi, ngāti awa of the bay of plenty x

make the ute man labour leader but instead of centrist banalities he goes around the country fixing up ageing paddock bashers and defending co-governance in infrastructure arrangements

it’s almost as if when you run a bland, centrist campaign in pursuit of the ficklest voters in new zealand - the swing voters - that it demoralises and depresses your most loyal voters. who knew !!!

the only poll that counts is [the 3rd of november when the electoral commissioner finalises the results which will have deprived national and act of a majority thanks to the special votes breaking moderately left]
