School's out & it's a great time to explore the outdoors. Consider an insect hunt with your kids. How many bugs can you find? Remember to hydrate while out. We've got fun new insect stickers in our Discovery Gift Shop if your water bottles need new decor. #EntoTuesday #Butterfly

In the late 19th and early 20th centuries, one of the widespread practices was to reconstruct missing portions of the specimen with plaster before display. A recent CT scan of a giant camel skull revealed this practice. #FossilFriday
Our first floor is closed for the time being but our fossil dig isn't! Make sure you dig up some fossils right NEXT to the fossils in Rhino Gallery on the main floor! You will find a variety of activities in the Rhino Gallery. #FossilFriday
Spring’s here & wasps are stirring. But are you sure that’s a wasp? The broad-banded hornet fly isn't actually a wasp. It mimics one to protect itself from predators like birds. It eats nectar and pollen, and is in the family #Syrphidae (hover flies). #EntoTuesday
Thank you members & visitors for voting Morrill Hall as Best Museum in the Lincoln Choice Awards for the 6th year in a row. We'll continue working hard to provide exciting exhibits, educational programs, and a fun learning experience for all. #MuseumMonday
The Nebraska Conehead is part of the katydid/grasshopper family. But it's not an agricultural pest. The insects = brown/green & can be found on roadsides & in weed patches. Their song = a series of shrill buzzes, 2s each, continuing until the male is disturbed. #EntoTuesday
Neb.'s state flower, goldenrod, turns 138 this month. Our #EntoTuesday feature = the goldenrod soldier beetle. It's often seen here in late summer & early fall on roadsides & gardens. It's an important pollinator, esp. for purple prairie onions, a native allium species.
Join us every other week as we explore behind the scenes of UNSM in a #MuseumMonday podcast series with the Rural Radio Network. Here's the first interview, offering an overview of the museum and its 4 different sites. post.futurimedia.com/krvnam/playlis…

Swiss artist, Peter Buri, carved this wooden statue of a wild boar which was purchased by the museum in 1909. The carving is made of Black Forest wood from the area of Brienz in Switzerland. Wildlife around Brienz became an inspiration to the wood carvers. #AnthroThursday
