“We can’t let feedback get pushed to the side and devalued in our rooms. While its impact is not felt as quickly as other tasks we do, it is one of the most valuable actions we can take in our classroom. Meaningful feedback is how students truly learn and grow.”

I’ve interacted with Shannon L. Schinkel (she/her) on here so many times, so it was wonderful to get to actually talk with her. Looking forward to this episode coming out Monday!

What if teachers broke down game film like football coaches?

Imagine if each week you reviewed at least one hour of class “game film.”

I think that would go a long way to improving teaching.

AI will have profound effects on how we educate children. I worry about how its speed and convenience takes the labor and struggle out of generating a learning product. Because learning and growth happens in the struggle. I am working to honor that more in my classroom.

One of my favorite questions to ask when starting any assessment work with a group:

If someone took away your ability to average scores over time to calculate a final grade, what would you do?

If we are allowing students to augment the writing process with AI, it is critical that we also ask them to occasionally complete pieces of writing entirely without AI to create a space for them to reflect on whether or not AI is helping them or making them dependent.

I absolutely believe in public education.

That works.

And I absolutely believe that what we're doing is not working.

So, I absolutely believe in changing public education.

It's time.

Absolutely.

Clarity in learning goals isn't about stifling creativity; it's about providing a clear pathway for learners so they can be successful.

What I wish I had learned earlier in my career:

Spending time unpacking my standards and then building learning progressions around them to provide clarity for students takes a good chunk of time up front, but it enabled me to be so much more creative in my classroom.
