Spoke with folks at ISU today about SLD. I take a practical, functional approach to assessment. Know how reading, math, & writing develop, figure out which skills a student does & doesn’t have, & intervene where they are.

That’s the only assessment that ultimately matters.

San Francisco has pivoted – although it will take 3 years to bring back the Algebra option in 8th grade (still unacceptable Dr. Matt Wayne).

I wish this was national news, given all the districts that followed SFUSD off this cliff.

So when is Emily Hanford making a podcast series on the science of maths? Instead of Lucy Calkins, it’s Jo Boaler. Instead of reading recovery, it’s discovery learning.

The issue of what is taught and especially “how many
minutes” is vitally important. School minutes are a precious resource. Every time we increase time for one thing, we decrease for another. We should talk about AND TEST these choices.

A third meta analysis has come out showing that phonemic awareness without letters is dramatically less effective than with letters. Is it time to retire orally only PA?

You favour inquiry learning but the evidence supports explicit teaching. What do you do? Try this.

1. Argue using personal anecdotes that nobody can refute
