I’ve been handed someone’s else’s kid when picking up my son at school, just because there was another brown mum (taller, different hair, but hey, the colour was the same). Pure arrogance.

I’ve often been overlooked for key opps on TV/print and given the backseat. I’ve learnt to be feisty and loud to be noticed. But I’ve also let a privileged take the privilege, because the privileged get told by the privileged it’s their privilege (does that make sense, sorry).

I’ve often tried to ‘lean in’ – thinking I have to be like ‘them’ and it has often resulted in me denying my culture. I was born in London, so that Britishness is in my blood, but there’s a cultural influence I grew up that I want, respect and love.
