After NOAA formed in 1970, scientists got to work to increase our ability to measure carbon dioxide in the atmosphere.

In 1973 & 1974, NOAA created 2 atmospheric observatories — one in Barrow (now Utqiaġvik) Alaska and one in American Samoa. esrl.noaa.gov/gmd/obop/
