SUNY Geneseo physics and astronomy professor Aaron Steinhauer has five tips on what to look for if you’re in the path of totality ⤵️

#Eclipse2024 : Operation centers have been set up to monitor traffic across the Thruway system throughout the day. This allows us to quickly respond to emergencies and keep traffic moving. If you are traveling, expect an increase in traffic and DO NOT park on the highway.

DOT is fully activated at WNY operations centers in Buffalo, Cheektowaga and Niagara Falls to maintain coordination and communications with our partners while we monitor and manage real-time traffic through traffic cameras, drones and boots on the ground

There is an expected high volume of car/foot traffic in the total eclipse viewing areas of NY. NYSP has extra Troopers staged throughout WNY, CNY, and Upstate NY. Multiple local first responding agencies will be staged throughout the State as well. call 911 for any emergencies.

Throughout the eclipse, NYSDOT Regional operation centers across NYS, like this one in Rochester, are activated and fully staffed to ensure seamless communications with our partners and allow us to monitor and react to real-time traffic incidents using traffic cameras and drones.

While eclipse totality may only last a few minutes, the impact on our roads could last much longer. Drivers should never pull over and watch on the side of the road to ensure first responders can get by in an emergency. #Eclipse24

A 4.0 magnitude aftershock from this morning’s earthquake in New Jersey just occurred.

We are continuing to review critical infrastructure and there are no reports of significant damage at this time.

The eclipse is a once-in-a generation event and we want you to enjoy it safely. That means staying out of the back country. With a new foot of snow in the ADK high peaks, the conditions are dangerous, even for experienced hikers.

Forest Ranger Captain Burns has some advice:

I’ve directed state agencies to survey our bridges, roads, railways, major transmission lines and dams, and any other potentially vulnerable infrastructure to ensure they are safe.

There are no reports of damage or injuries from this morning's earthquake at this time.
