This is why the onus is on governments to understand what's coming, and to protect people - not dying industries.

Big new scoop from DeSmog.

Shell executive warned in 1989 that 'global warming could challenge the very fabric of the world’s ecological and economic systems.'

Shell then decided to spread climate denial.

Good morning with good news: Norway's data indicates EVs 'fail at a lower rate than gas cars in extreme cold.'

EVs are 25% of cars in Norway. In a recent cold snap, 13% of cars unable to start were EV. For 2024 so far, 21% of cars unable to start were EV.

'Today, the biggest question related to the transition..to 100% eco-clean renewable energy resources is, can we maintain the electricity grid stable every minute of every day?'

'The answer is clearly YES, and it is practical'

Big new environmental policy document from China's top decision-making bodies dropped while I was on my bourgeois Christmas vacation. Party Central Committee and State Council “Opinions on Comprehensively Promoting the Construction of a Beautiful China”. Highlights in a thread.

China interconnected massive volumes of renewable capacity, and then pursued a proactive transmission expansion plan to mitigate congestion. In contrast, the prevailing US approach is to require transmission expansion *before* renewables can interconnect.

All the shocking disrepair in this country - floods, councils collapsing, wages flatlined, corruption rife - and this Government's obsessive focus, enabled by their tame media, is on a few thousand poor asylum seekers.

It's completely despicable and dysfunctional

When people think of heat pumps they typically think of little grey boxes with a fan.

But there are also gigantic industrial scale heat pumps like this one in Denmark replacing coal heating with heat from the seawater providing heat for 25,000 homes.

Nordics have a great advantage for their power grids: they possess (extremely) large energy storage.

The number 1 is Norway as the country can store 75.7 TWh in its water dams for electricity. That's 14 MWh per capita (a PowerWall has 1000 less energy).

I thought such days were long behind us. I remember my fellow pupils struggling with anti-Muslim prayer ban in my senior school in Ilford. Got it all sorted with help from a sensible teacher who happened to be a white Muslim convert. Unbelievable such nonsense still ongoing.

Poll of super-rich shows that 74% support higher taxes on wealth to help address the cost of living crisis & public services

Taxing wealth is likely to be vital to provide resources for climate transition yet there is no political discussion of it in UK

Labour's 'clean power by 2030' pledge:

* At least 5GW of floating offshore wind.
* Double onshore wind to 35GW.
* Triple solar to 50GW
* Quadruple offshore wind - 55GW.
* Get Hinkley & Sizewell over line, back new nuclear (SMRs)
* Double govt's target on green hydrogen (10GW)

The complexity of global earth systems means that we really don't know how far, or how near we are, to triggering a runaway ecological collapse. We are playing with fire - and the 1.5C 'safe limit' is not a meaningful reflection of how dangerous and unfathomable the risks are.

Incidentally shows laggards like the UK have no excuse for not getting their grids up to scratch. It can be done rapidly.

Some here used to say: OK, so China builds a lot of wind and solar capacity, but not all of it gets connected to the grid. Now China's grid caught up, with a vengeance.

BAU projections like BNEF's fail to understand the counterintuitive dynamics of disruptions. The competitive economics of A-EVs will disrupt private car ownership, leading to a fraction of cars on roads, leading to reduced power consumption static1.squarespace.com/static/585c343…

The old, incumbent order is attempting to attack and undermine the foundations of an emerging post-carbon system. This is to be expected. But as the history of disruptions shows, this is a signal of the accelerating decline of the old.
