On this National Day for Truth and Reconciliation, we must reflect on the heartbreaking legacy of residential schools, and honour those who have been impacted by them. I am proud of the GNWT’s commitment to reconciliation and its strong relationships with Indigenous communities.

2023 was by far the NWT’s worst wildfire season on record. It was also the first time any of us have ever experienced an out-of-territory evacuation. To guide this historic undertaking, our government used its Territorial Emergency Plan, and that plan worked.

Behind this year’s historic wildfire response were people – people who are our friends and neighbours – who made critical decisions and worked tirelessly to keep NWT communities and residents safe. My heartfelt thanks goes out to all of you for your dedication and sacrifice.

I have once again extended the Territorial State of Emergency for the South Slave Region due to the ongoing wildfire situation in the NWT. The extended order – originally declared on August 15, 2023 and first renewed on August 29, 2023 – will be in effect until October 02, 2023.
