We made mistakes around the infilling of and are working hard to put them right. We understand the concerns being expressed.
However, we are determined to prove ourselves worthy custodians of legacy railway structures.
Please judge us on our future actions.

Our engineer, Phil Dynn, is seeking views on options for the management of several legacy structures:

1 infill
2 burial within Type 1 stone
3 void removal beneath span
4 envelopment within foam concrete
5 aggregate embankment around superstructure.

All feedback welcome.

It's unacceptable that campaigners misrepresent evidence to undermine our efforts, whilst we diligently carry out planned, permanent works for routine asset management purposes using rights intended only for immediate, temporary interventions in emergency situations.

Self-evidently, our infilling of under emergency powers was entirely justified.
We had a 2-year old inspection that recommended fencing repairs and the bridge was only able to carry 32t vehicles on a road restricted to 3t.
The evidence could not be more compelling.

We don't need consent to retain a Class Q infill beyond 12 months as our engineer has personally arranged with Suella Braverman to have the requirement revoked for any planned emergencies involving localised stonework displacement of less than 2mm.
We have the emails.

We take a zero-tolerance approach to criminality at our legacy structures.
So we have today reported to the Police our use of Class Q emergency powers to infill safe bridges and failure to pay the £50 rent Queensbury Tunnel which cost taxpayers £7M.
The Met is going to investigate.

We are committed to improving our stakeholder engagement so we have sought detailed information from the Eden Valley and Stainmore railways for our Great Musgrave bridge retrospective planning application.
We have also sent them a shovel and two tubes of Polycell ‘Fix and Grout’.

We have awarded 14 works contracts worth £192K as part of ongoing preparations for doing absolutely no work at all at 68 structures where infilling or demolition has been paused by the Government.
Move along now please.

We have issued three contracts relating to Barcombe bridge, for infilling (£176K), associated minor works (£70K) and ecological preparations (£14K).
But we categorically have no current plans to infill Barcombe bridge.
Obviously.
Ob...vi...ous...ly.

We DO care about ecology and we DO care about the environment.
Only yesterday, rather than using pesticide, our engineer beat a great crested newt to death with a rolled-up newspaper and then recycled it.

We welcome our collaborators RailwayHeritageTrust supporting the £7.8M investment we've made in the 'awful structure' called Queensbury Tunnel.
For this taxpayer money, we have transformed a dangerous flooded liability into a dangerous flooded liability we can no longer fully inspect.

Our management team has assured residents that, prior to infilling Barcombe bridge, the community will be given the opportunity to construct a heritage railway through the village's ecologically sensitive wildlife corridor. Or perhaps open a coal mine.

In consultation with government, we have today set out ambitious plans to deliver our bridge infilling programme with net-zero honesty, integrity and social responsibility.

For the purposes of clarity, we have no current plans to implement our plans for the planned infilling of Barcombe bridge.
