The The Globe and Mail is very worried the modest rise in capital gains tax on non-primary residences, 'has caught far more middle-income 🇨🇦's than expected'.

This suggests 🇨🇦's middle class owns much of the wealth tied up in investment properties. They don't.

These are important measures but they pale in comparison to the depth of need & are disproportionate to supply measures.

The plan contains $28.5B to address affordability & homelessness, and in contrast, $65.6B plus considerable tax breaks to incentivize private market supply.

The ONLY way this will result in tenant rights is if tenants organize now.

Don't be surprised when a 'multistakeholder committee' is announced with the following make-up:

1⃣ for-profit landlord
1⃣ REIT
1⃣ non-profit landlord
1⃣ bank
1⃣ academic
1⃣ think-tank
1⃣ renter

While we're focused on housing, it's worth remembering Canada still isn't building as many new homes as it built in 1976. The population that year was 23 million. It's now 41 million.

Black & Indigenous thinkers & writers long ago clocked how colonial slave-owning economies have evolved into the economies of today. Its always about the land.

We need to have a serious conversation about this.

The ONLY thing this is achieving is hiding the messiness of being forced to live outdoors with all your belongings and no access to hygiene, privacy, or garbage disposal.

Why is this our fully funded response to homelessness?

'It doesn't have anything to solve the housing crisis for people that are worried about their rent today. Homelessness in Canada is exploding. It's as big as the largest natural disaster in Canadian history in terms of the loss of housing.'

When house prices rise faster than earnings from jobs, the divide between the haves and the have-nots grows.

Landowners get rich at the expense of renters/workers.

This is a good reminder of what we're doing here. The Alliance to End Homelessness in the Capital Region was launched in 2007 with a mission to end homelessness. The following year they estimated a need for 1500 homes attached to a Housing First Program to end homelessness. It never materialized.

It's not that we don't need to reform the whole system of how a home gets built in this country, but it angers me that y'all put this need in front of the need for NATIONAL SUBSIDIZED HOUSING.

It means you get affordable housing before homeless people and I think that's wrong.

'The almost 300 units BC Housing has brought online since 2021 are woefully inadequate compared to the level of local homelessness, Susan Martin told councillors.'

If CMHC had vetted the program w/ a human rights accountability framework (as many of us have been demanding and as is required under the National Housing Strategy Act), the 55 billion in public subsidies would have been used differently. Actually for ppl core housing need.

During Ireland’s Great Hunger, 1847 the Anishinaabe, Haudenosaunee & Wendat selflessly contributed to famine relief.
Yesterday we came together to express gratitude and recognise this contribution with a tree planting ceremony.
