Utter nonsense, By all accounts, Liz Truss’s book - fairly universally ridiculed - is not so much a collection of ideas, but rather, a collection of empty slogans. Why would anyone listen to these?!

Damaging outcome of a legal case concludes that buyers of a leasehold - apparently not legal professionals at all - should have known more than their own legal advisers who were not responsible for failing to tell them of a damaging flaw in lease terms. Why buy leasehold?

But the point about capping or scrapping ground rents is ‘Whose ox is gored?’. It’s clear that it’s the insurance industry, not pension schemes, which bear the cost. If insurers made unwise investment decisions, there is no obligation on the part of the State to bail them out.

The fact that the UK has smaller house sizes than it Continent counterparts isn’t because Brits like small houses. But it may reflect Land Law which jacks up prices by enabling the separation of land ownership from ownership of any land use activity that sits on top of it!

The endurance of the legal structure behind Freehold/Leasehold tenure has its roots in the historic role that land ownership played in wealth in Britain. This retained its power even as Britain industrialised and urbanised into the 20th Century.

Treasury, Michael Gove are ducking and diving on why they refuse to follow through on their vow to cap Ground Rents! Why? Contrary to their claims, there is not 1 shred of evidence that pensioners are harmed. If there were, they’d put it in their FoI response to Free Leaseholders

The reason this stupid deranged woman didnt see the pension crisis coming is she fired Tom Scholar the perm sec HM Treasury and I know never spoke to anyone in the pension industry and only took advice from extreme crackpots IEA and other fellow traveling free market…

Leasehold/Freehold Reform Bill must spell out clearly what is - and is not - a permissible expense which can be collected from Leaseholders via Service charges. Maintenance of hallways, stairways, lifts; yes. Structural repairs, roof, external walls, walkways; no.

Serious question: Why should the cost of registering a building with the Building Safety Regulator fall to its leaseholders who own neither the building nor the units they occupy? Only the actual building owner should pay the fee. Passage to leaseholders must be banned.

As the political party most closely identified with defence of property rights, the Conservatives must defend the property rights of leaseholders, whose property rights are undermined almost daily, with the same vigour applied in favour of landowners. Free Leaseholders

A classic example of what behavioural economists describe as the ‘Wall of Money Illusion’. A big lump sum up front is more valuable than cash paid out over time. The maths almost never work out.

Complex court case where freeholder demanded that leaseholders pay not only building insurance premiums but also cover payments on a big commission for choosing that policy. Court ruled that freeholder only entitled to 1/3 commission, still far too much! …ndschamber.decisions.tribunals.gov.uk/Aspx/view.aspx…

Freeholders receiving millions £££ in kickbacks from insurance companies when they sign up for policies where the actual premiums are paid for by leaseholders. No incentive for freeholders to demand ‘value for money’. theguardian.com/money/2024/apr…

A leaseholder - in her own words - describes the perfectly legal ways that Freeholders can confiscate occupiers’ cash. Even where laws exist to protect leaseholders, the enforcement mechanisms are broken. Tories have abandoned their own 2019 manifesto! archive.ph/2024.04.05-133…

Yet another Conservative MP - former housing minister Robert Jenrick, no less - calls for eventual scrapping of leasehold entirely, allowing flat occupiers to actually own the homes they live in. archive.ph/2024.04.05-074…

What do you do with a much longer life? Here are some thoughts. The idea of mass withdrawal from the workforce in our 7th decade of life has come and gone.

Good to see that The Spectator busting the false claim that capping ground rents paid to Freeholders will harm pension funds. Official data show that pension fund investment in ALL property - mostly offices, retail, industrial - is only 2.8% of all investments. Microscope, anyone?

A Freeholder argues in favour of keeping confiscatory ability to demand payment of ground rents from leaseholders even though these do nothing to mitigate undocumented and substantial service charges levied annually. Utter nonsense in every line here. Free Leaseholders

A property industry expert on leasehold reform confirms what we suspected; Freeholders ability to extract unlimited cash from leaseholders drives up land values. Local authorities see some indirect gains but it’s a poor argument against reform. Free Leaseholders

A Freeholder lobby group - predictably - is arguing that any effort to rebalance power in flat occupancy represents ‘theft’ from FHs. That ignores the legal powers FHs now have to confiscate wealth from Leaseholders. Free Leaseholders
