In 1963, Dad spoke out against those who said the Birmingham campaign was a bridge too far. His words—that injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere—ring just as true today as they did 61 years ago.

In remembering Dad's Letter from the Birmingham Jail, I am reminded of his words that 'freedom is never voluntarily given by the oppressor; it must be demanded by the oppressed.'

More than six decades later, we must continue demanding our freedom until it is given.

Our nation is more divided than at any other time in our lives. In his final book, Dad asked: 'Where do we go from here?'

Do we choose love and community or hatred and division?
