In The Anxious Child, Jonathan Haidt suggests that: “There was little sign of an impending mental illness crisis among adolescents in the 2000s. Then, quite suddenly, in the early 2010s, things changed.” However, in my view, CDC data tells a different story. 🧵 #MentalHealthcrisis

A timely reminder for us all below. We're living in interesting times where it seems that the more we talk about mental health, the less we seem to understand it or each other. There's little room for nuance & complexity in our online world. I worry where we are heading #scicomm

'Social media' and 'mental health' and 'teenagers in the US' are not monoliths and it's not helpful to discuss them as if they are. Those who understand this are less likely to contribute to online discourse, because social media affordances discourage nuanced discussion.
